In Room 10 lately we have been writing speeches. We were allowed to choose any topic we wanted as long as we could back it up with some good key points. Our speeches were written over a couple of days, it was hard but we got good results. After we had written our speeches we had to say them in front of the class. If we were successful we got to speak in front of the syndicate.

The syndicate teachers then chose a few people to move on to the semi finals in front of Miss Smith and Mr. Rickard. After everyone in the semi finals did their speech it was up to the judges to choose who was going to the finals!
We are the only class in the school to get all of our semi finalists into the finals. They are Laura-Jane, Griffin and I. In the finals we will be speaking in front of the whole school.

It will be on Friday in the hall, we will have three judges. They will be sitting one on the left, one on the right and one right in the middle. There will be one person from each year group who wins. It will be nerve racking but at least we got this far!

It was an exciting day because camp was starting! While the very last stuff was being packed my mind was exploding with questions, alas they couldn’t be answered, time to go.

Waiting at the train station was a very anxious for us, for about forty minutes we were watching trains come and go only near the end we realized we were at the wrong platform!

The train was actually pretty fancy it seemed hi-tech but was just normal. It was Tuesday and a bit cold but I was warm with excitement that soon we would be on camp! I met with C.J. first, talked about stuff then met up with Phill. After some talking and standing round we put the bags in and hopped in the train.

The train on the inside was awesome-ish. It had tables and chairs so when the train started chugging. We started eating stuff, reading and walking all around the train. There were free sugar sachets for coffee. There was even a toilet on the train I was thinking hmmm were does the waste go…

When we arrived we took a long time getting our bags out then got onto a bus. The ride was a long one. On the way over to the camp Griffin, Phill and I wore playing a game, with the cracks in the wind screen. When we got to our destination first we put our bags in one pile. Then we got told what we wore going to do. After that we went in to groups then we had to find a place for our bivvy.

The bike ride was really fun. It was a long and dangerous ride nobody got hurt on the way to the house, where some other guys and I planted some cabbage trees. It was a lot of fun. On the way back we did have an accident I was going too quickly and started going fishy tail then I fell off onto a gravel road I waited a long time (or what felt like it!) for the ambulance to come when they did they took me to hospital. They treated me very nicely the nurses name was Heidi. That night the class slept in their bivvy’s and I got picked up to go home.

This was our last day of camp. We started the day by taking our tents down then we had breakfast. After breakfast we packed our bags and our lunches. We got ready to do our tramp and our guide, Pete, talked to us about the importance of signing a visitors book. Our tramp had a scary start because while our guide talked to us about a spooky story of a man who was lost, an old man who appeared drunk approached us. No one was sure what to do, we all thought it was the man in the story but after talking to him we realised he had diabetes! He was having a low blood sugar attack. After several choc chip cookies he was on his way again.

On our tramp we climbed over trees, some of us got stuck in the mud – leaving our shoes behind us! We stopped to have a rest by a river. Magnus, Riley, Esi and Pete were zooming down the hill with bush-made poles guiding them down to avoid falling. They ran ahead of the pack, jumping an dodging over rocks and trees. After our big tramp, we got to see an old Totara tree that resembled a large hollow house. Most of us had a great time and realised we enjoyed tramping. The tramp took us a total of six hours to complete and at the end of it there was a bus waiting to take us back to the train to return home.

Day three we woke up from the best sleep on camp (in the cabins). For breakfast we had cereal and mince from dinner the night before. After we made lunch we set off in the bus to go caving and on the flying fox.

On the way there we got stuck behind about 100 sheep we had to herd them into a paddock about two kilometers down the bumpy road.
We arrived at a huge field that we had to walk across to get to the cave and the flying fox when we got there we were split into two groups, year 7s and year 8s. I’m a year 8 so I went to the flying fox first it was so scary because I went last and you have to run off a giant cliff to go down it. I started running and suddenly I got lifted up I was flying over a river that was around twenty meters below me. I went down it three times and after that we went back to meet the year 7s and had lunch.

I’m a year 7 so I did the caving first. We put on helmets and torches and headed into the cave. We walked though it for about 30 minutes and we came to a big wall that we had to climb. Once we climbed it we had to squeeze though a small hole on our tummy’s and climb down a little wall. After that we walked for a bit in the cave. We had to stop and turn off our torches and walk in a sort of conga line. There were heaps of glow worms that was really cool. Once we got out we saw the year 8s on the flying fox and I was really excited.

After the caving and the flying fox we headed back to the camping ground and found that the tents were already set up. We picked our tents and settled in.
For dinner we had burgers and then we roasted some marshmallows. After that we got into bed and had an early night’s sleep. But some people heard the possum and found it hard to sleep.

On Monday the 6th of September room ten slowly wondered down to Tawa swimming pool with our swimming bags hung over our shoulders. When we got to the entrance we gathered together and were told the safety regulations and the plan for the following hour. We excitedly got changed into our togs until we were told by the instructors to hop in to the pool. We all scrambled in, the boys in one lane and the girls in another. The instructor got us to warm up by swimming a few lengths of various strokes, and before long our names were listed and the two instructors were jotting down which group we should be put in, on account of the way we were swimming. It was quite a short lesson and after doing one last length of freestyle, we had to hop out. We slowly got dressed but before we left the changing room we found out that someone had forgotten there underwear! I’m pretty sure we all had a great time but maybe there was one unfortunate person!

Term three in rm10

This term we are taking part in the school dodge ball tournament; we have practised hard and intensely and have a pretty good chance at beating some of the other classes. This term we have also taken part in the KOS (Keeping Ourselves Safe) program we have learnt a lot about different types of abuse like emotional and physical abuse we have also learnt about what to do if it happens to us. Such as, talking to a counsellor, calling the police or kids line or telling someone else you trust about it so that they can help put a stop to it. Abuse is also NEVER the victims fault.

In maths we have worked on fractions, ratios and percentages and have done our PAT tests. As a class we are reading the novel "Tomorrow When the War Began” by John Marsden. Miss Siefe said that we might be going to see the movie when it comes out in the movie theatre, depending on the rating. We have the Tawa Intermediate Open Night on Thursday and a disco coming up in week 8.

Over all we've had a great start to the term let’s hope the rest of it goes well!
